What to Expect During a Roof Replacement in Stanley, NC

From the free inspection to cleanup: what happens on a CPR roof replacement, and how to get your home ready for install day.

If you live in Stanley and your roof is due for replacement, you probably have the same questions most homeowners have before the trucks show up: What actually happens? Do I need to be home? What should I do with the car, the dog, and the patio furniture? And how do I know the job was done right when I can’t see most of it from the yard?

We’re Campbells Precision Roofing, a GAF Master Elite® contractor based next door in Denver, NC, and we’ve been roofing Stanley, northern Gaston County, and the Lake Norman area since 2015. Here’s a plain walk-through of a CPR roof replacement, from the free inspection to cleanup, so nothing on install day catches you off guard.

Step 1: A free inspection and a straight answer

A CPR replacement starts with a look at the roof you have now. We check the shingles, flashing, vents, valleys, and gutters, look for soft spots, and take photos of what we find. Then we give you a plain repair-or-replace answer.

Not all Stanley roofs need replacing. A lot of what we see here is repair work: a leak around a vent, a section of wind damage, or flashing that’s pulled away from a wall. If a repair will do the job, we’ll tell you. If the roof is worn out, with widespread granule loss, curling, or more than one leak path, replacement is usually the smarter long-term call. Our roof repair and replacement page covers how we make that call.

Step 2: Picking the shingle and the system

We install GAF architectural shingles and standing seam metal roofs. For a shingle roof in Stanley, the choice is usually between two GAF lines:

  • GAF Timberline HDZ®, which GAF calls the #1-selling shingle in North America, with LayerLock® Technology and the StrikeZone® nailing area.
  • GAF Timberline UHDZ®, the premium step up: thicker, with GAF’s Dual Shadow Line.

The shingle is only part of the roof. We install a complete GAF system: underlayment over the deck, leak barrier in the spots that see the most water, starter strips at the edges, and matching hip and ridge caps. That matters for two reasons. A system holds up better than mixed parts, and as a GAF Master Elite® contractor we can offer GAF’s enhanced warranties, including the Silver Pledge™ and Golden Pledge® Limited Warranties, on qualifying GAF roofing systems. Terms and restrictions apply; see gaf.com/warranties. Your written estimate lists the shingle line, color, and components, so you know exactly what’s going on your house. Compare the lines in our GAF shingle lines guide or see Timberline HDZ® and UHDZ®.

If you’d rather have metal, we can talk through a standing seam roof too. See metal roofing.

Step 3: Before install day

Once you sign off on the estimate and pick a color, we put you on the schedule and talk through the plan with you. A few things help the day go smoothly:

  • Move vehicles out of the garage and away from the driveway the night before, so the crew has room to work and nothing gets in the way.
  • Clear the yard edges. Patio furniture, grills, planters, and kids’ toys near the house are easier to move ahead of time.
  • Take down loose wall décor on the top floor. Tear-off makes the house vibrate a bit, and pictures can shift.
  • Plan for pets. The noise is real. Some dogs do fine inside, and some are happier somewhere else for the day.
  • Let us know about anything special, like a satellite dish, a solar line, a septic field, or a garden bed you want us to keep clear of.

You don’t have to stay home all day, but we do want a way to reach you by phone or text if we find something during tear-off.

Step 4: Tear-off, down to the deck

CPR replacements are full tear-offs. We never lay new shingles over old ones. The crew strips the old shingles, underlayment, and worn flashing down to the roof deck.

This is the part of the job you can’t see from the street, and it’s the reason we tear off. With the deck exposed, we can walk it, find soft or rotted boards, and replace damaged decking before anything new goes on. Covering a bad deck with new shingles just hides the problem. If we find decking that needs replacing, we show you and explain what it means for your job.

Step 5: Dry-in, flashing, and the new roof

Once the deck is sound, the new roof goes on in layers. On a typical CPR replacement, that means:

  • Synthetic underlayment across the deck, so the house is dried in quickly.
  • Ice-and-water membrane in valleys and around penetrations, where water likes to find its way in.
  • New step flashing where the roof meets a wall, instead of reusing old, bent metal.
  • Drip edge along the edges, so water drips clear instead of running back under the shingles or down the fascia.
  • Ridge vents, so the attic can breathe.

Then the shingles go on, nailed in the manufacturer’s nailing zone, followed by the hip and ridge caps. Pipe boots, vents, and chimney or wall flashing get attention on each roof we do, because that’s where most leaks start.

Steep or complex roofs, with lots of dormers and valleys, take more safety setup and time on the roof. We scope that in up front, so it’s not a surprise.

Step 6: Cleanup and warranty registration

A new roof leaves debris, and we treat cleanup as part of the job. We clean up as part of the job and run magnets over the driveway and yard to pick up nails.

For GAF enhanced warranties, such as the Silver Pledge™ and Golden Pledge® Limited Warranties, we handle the registration with GAF. If gutters need attention, we can handle that too: we install seamless aluminum gutters and RainDrop® gutter guards in Stanley, on their own or with a new roof. See gutters.

Questions Stanley homeowners ask us

Do I need to be home during the roof replacement?

No, as long as we can reach you by phone or text. Many homeowners work from home or run errands during the day. We just need access to the outside of the house and a quick way to ask you a question.

What happens if it rains?

We watch the forecast and plan tear-off around it, and we dry the roof in with underlayment before new shingles go on.

Will you go over my old shingles to save time?

No. Our replacements are full tear-offs down to the deck. That’s the only way to check the decking and get the new roof right.

How far is Stanley from your shop?

Close. Our shop is in Denver, just over the Lincoln County line from Stanley, and we also work in nearby Lincolnton and Gastonia. More on our Stanley roofing page.
